KARAMA believes that the dominant narrative in American society generally with respect to the Arab and Islamic world is very negative, and with respect to the Palestine/Israel conflict is extremely one-sided. We also believe that these biases are reflected in the History-Social Science Framework for California Public Schools.
We analyzed the Framework's Grade Ten segment on nationalism in the Middle East, highlighted the most egregious language and developed alternative wording to address this imbalance. The result, entitled Re-Framing the Framework on the Middle East, is available by clicking here.
We have also collected a variety of alternative resources on the Arab and Islamic world, with emphasis on Palestine, including maps, articles and documents. They are available in pdf format on our Resources page.
KARAMA exhibits at the annual conferences of the California and National Councils for the Social Studies. We will have these and a variety of other materials on display, including books and dvd's, some for sale and some for free. Stop by and visit us!
